KALAMAZOO -- Only a few practices remain before the Western Michigan Broncos take the field at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor this Saturday September 5th. Michigan Football is currently dealing with allegations of working over NCAA guidelines for weekly football hours.
In a press conference Monday U-of-M Head Coach Rich Rodriguez made it clear "We go by the rules at Michigan".
The initial allegations came from several players speaking to the Detroit Free Press as a piece of their investigation. The initial players quoted in an online posting of the investigation on FREEP.COM asked not to be named for fear of team issues arising.
Among the allegations was 10AM-10PM Sundays which would break the 4-hour-rule instituted by the NCAA. All valid issues if they are true.
What this does do however is create somewhat of a distraction for the Western Michigan Broncos. A piece good, a piece bad.
On the one hand the distraction could be heavy for an already young Michigan football squad, thus giving the Broncos an advantage over a team not only dealing with the pressure of overcoming a 3-9 season, but now overcoming a possible rules violation.
On the other hand Western Michigan must stay away from the press that will be hitting them over the next week. Make no doubt at tomorrow's press luncheon someone will ask about Rich Rodriguez and Michigan's current issues.
But as Brandon West and Bill Cubit said below, they are simply worried about getting their team ready. The overall point being...stay focused on yourself and the allegations won't affect how WMU plays on Saturday.
