Brandon West Selected to Doak Walker Watch List

DALLAS - Senior running back Brandon West enters his final season on the watch list of one of the most prestigious awards in the country. He is one of 45 running backs to be chosen as a candidate for the 2009 Doak Walker Award as announced by the Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum. West also enters the 2009 campaign as WMU's record holder in career kick returns, kick return yards and all-purpose yards.

West rushed for 1,026 yards a season ago to lead the Western Michigan ground attack and now sits sixth on the career rushing list at WMU with 2,507 career yards. The Brunswick, Ga., native is also the program's career record holder for kick returns (85), kick return yards (2,158) and all-purpose yards (5,406). In fact West is the all-purpose yardage record holder in a career, season (2,119) and game (346), and the kick return yards record holder in a career, season (960) and game (212).

The 15th Bronco to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, looking to accomplish the feat in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Robert Sanford in 1999 and 2000, is joined by a trio of Mid-American Conference bretheren in Eugene Jarvis (Kent State), MiQuale Lewis (Ball State) and James Starks (Buffalo).

The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on November 11, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on November 23. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on November 30 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
