The 2009 MAC Media Day brought 13 teams from across the region together in Detroit to give a pre-season glimpse to multiple forms of media. Coaches and 26 players were shuffled through Ford Field discussing various topics, most of them spewing similar stock answers about the lack of meaning in pre-season polls and preparations for the season opener. And then there’s Bill Cubit.
The head coach for the Broncos was refreshing in his responses—he actually admitted to being shocked in his teams 2nd seed standing behind rival Central Michigan. Not surprised that his team wasn’t on top, which, for those of you who remember two seasons ago, didn’t mean anything then. He was surprised that his teams were ranked so high considering the massive loss of seniors last year and a full roster of fresh young faces. How many coaches would admit that?
Now this may or may not necessarily be the answer his PR department would like but the honesty was refreshing.
However, regardless of how Cubit comments on his Bronco’s place in the standings, he has got to be frustrated to again be sitting under CMU for another year. Central Michigan received 18 votes to WMU’s four to win the conference title game and if prediction holds true they could clench their fourth West Division title.
Three consecutive titles can be strong class moving through. Four straight titles is league dominance and that has got to kill the Broncos, especially with a deep seeded rivalry, a constant comparison between the two squads and the ever increasing pressure to finally win one.
Yes, Central is returning star QB Dan LeFevour and WR Bryan Anderson but Western is packing some returning punches of their own and some new talent that has yet to be seen or measured for that matter. Western Michigan may begin this season under CMU but there is still many, many days before that dance.
